MINHO

Minho is located in the northwest of Portugal and offers many reasons to visit. Apart from the beautiful landscapes, it also gathers an incredibly rich cultural and historical heritage. Probably that is part of the reason this region’s inhabitants - minhotos - have a very strong personality and character.
Despite the old traditions and ancient customs, which are proudly kept, the younger population keeps pushing boundaries, innovating and reinventing the old in new and creative ways. The bigger portion of Peneda-Gerês, the only National Park in the country, belongs to Minho.
  • Main towns: Viana do Castelo, Guimarães, Braga.
  • Highlights: Historical and Cultural Heritage; Natural Landscapes; Beach; Gastronomy; Wine; Traditional Festivities; Water Sports; Arts & Crafts.
  • Weather: Mild temperatures near the coast and wider temperature span inland; Heavy rainfall mainly during Winter; Common to have strong gushes of wind, particularly near the ocean.
  • Getting in and out: Porto's airport is within a 30 to 45 minute drive to Braga and Viana do Castelo. There are also regular buses and railway connections to the main towns.
  • Getting around: Having a car is a plus.
  • Nearby regions: Porto, Trás-os-Montes and Douro.
  • Journal Posts: Arcos de Valdevez and Sistelo; Guimarães; Ponte de Lima.
