PENEDA-GERÊS NATIONAL PARK

Peneda-Gerês National Park is located in the northern part of the country and occupies an area of about 70.000 hectares. It was the very first protected area nationwide not only because of its natural value, but also for the rich cultural heritage.
The landscapes around Peneda-Gerês are unlike any other in the whole country. Within a relatively short distance you can find massive U-shaped glacial valleys, dense woods, rocky mountains and crystal clear lagoons, being a paradise for adrenaline junkies, fans of the outdoors and hikers. It belongs to both Minho and Trás-Os-Montes regions.
  • Main towns: Caldas do Gerês.
  • Highlights: Natural Landscapes; Gastronomy; Historical and Cultural Heritage; Hiking; Water Sports.
  • Weather: During Spring and Autumn temperatures are mild and the colours of the landscape are beautiful; Heavy rainfall mainly during Winter.
  • Getting in and out: Porto's airport is 1 hour and 30 minutes driving to Gerês.
  • Getting around: Having a car to drive around is strongly recommended.
  • Nearby regions: Minho, Trás-os-Montes, Douro and Beira Alta Interior.
