ALGARVE

Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal, cornered against the immense Atlantic Ocean to the south and the west. River Guadiana marks the frontier with Spain on the east side. It remains the most touristic region in the country, mainly due to its delightful weather and stunning beaches. Due to mass tourism some areas lost their authenticity, but this region still has many places where the real Algarve can still be found and explored away from the crowds.
On the south coast there are uncountable beaches worth getting to know. To the west side they’re smaller and sheltered by tall cliffs, whereas to the east they have long and wide stretches of sand and wild dunes. The beautiful Ria Formosa Natural Park is located here. The west coast and the southwestern tip, where Sagres is located, are part of Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park.
Although the coast is gorgeous, the countryside of Algarve also deserves a visit. It is quieter and for fans of nature there’s Serra de Monchique, a hilltop that is great to exercise, enjoy the outdoors and then recover at the thermal springs.
Apart from the beautiful natural gems, Algarve is also a region with a very long history. It has been home to many civilisations throughout the years, which adds to its natural charm.
