SERRA DA ESTRELA NATURAL PARK
Serra da Estrela is the largest protected area in Portugal and it's located right in the heart of the country. It is also one of the most famous ones because it is where Portugal mainland highest peak can be found, where one of our best cheeses is produced and also one of the few areas where there are snow sport facilities during Winter time.
Massive rocks with over 250 million years mark the southern part of the park, whereas the territory to the north is taken over by large plains. Also, three important Portuguese rivers have their origin in Serra da Estrela. This generates different habitats and an incredible biodiversity, which are a joy to discover. It is worth venturing to this natural park during different times of the year as the landscapes change abruptly according to the weather conditions: Summer is a joy to go for a dip in the crystal clear waters of the lagoons, Spring and Autumn are perfect for outdoors lovers and hiking fans and Winer time is considered peak season because of the white blankets of snow that cover the mountains.
In terms of cultural and historical legacy, old customs and traditions are still very much alive and cattle farming and agriculture remain two of the main occupations, which gives this region a special charm.
